Take US 59, in Iowa, just north of Defiance, just right before the bridge.

What happens when you make weight at a CAT scale in Iowa, and on the same load, you are over weight in Illinois?

How does that happen? Thank God it was only a warning.

CAT Scale:

A network of over 1,500 certified truck scales across the U.S. and Canada found primarily at truck stops. CAT scales are by far the most trustworthy scales out there.

In fact, CAT Scale offers an unconditional Guarantee:

“If you get an overweight fine from the state after our scale showed your legal, we will immediately check our scale. If our scale is wrong, we will reimburse you for the fine. If our scale is correct, a representative of CAT Scale Company will appear in court with the driver as a witness”

Did you get fuel before or after you used the CAT scale? If you fueled, what was your fuel level when you scaled the load?

These are the things that come to mind for me. Also, it has been said that if you can produce a CAT scale ticket when that happens, then the outcome will be what you got, a warning. It appears that the state scales are not checked/calibrated as often as the CAT scales are.

Just my 2 cents worth not knowing more than what was provided.

You didn't say what your axle weights were so we're kind of guessing here.

1) Some states allow more than 12,000 on the steers, some don't.

2) Like Ernie said, fueling up can put you over.

3) Some states tolerate a few hundred pounds over on a set of axles as long as you're not over gross. Some won't. It could have been that.

4) I know it doesn't apply right now but it's something to be aware of for the future...in the winter you can pick up a lot of slush and ice. Not only underneath the tractor and trailer, but you can have a lot of snow and ice on top of a trailer. You can easily pick up 1000 pounds that way and it can put you overweight.

What were your axle weights?

CAT Scale said I was 32,180 on the drives and 32,360 on the trailer. Illinois says I was 36,000 on my drives and 28,000 on the trailer.

Ok, that makes no sense at all. Even a scale that's in sore need of calibration isn't going to be off by 4,000 pounds. Did you show the scalemaster your CAT scale ticket? If so, what did they say about the 4,000 pound discrepancy?

I don't think the officer was interested. On top of that, I had the "honor and priviledge" of causing my first (AND THIS BETTER BE MY LAST OR I AM GOING TO SCREAM, GOD SO HELP ME)wtf-2.gif fender bender. I don't even want to talk about yesterday. It sucked from around Chicago to the end. No ticket though. I guess that would be a sliver of a "silver lining" in all this. That and I didn't get fired. YET.

Space management is very important even in slow traffic. I assume it was slow traffic cause you said fender bender and not wreck.

Almost every company teaches the Smith System now and if its followed to the letter accidents do not happen.
