I am seriously considering a career change so I was thinking of this career. What I wanted to do is go to school get my cdl then pick a company. After that I was going to do my probation time if there is a time like that then get my wife into it. From there I wanted us to team drive. Any opinions on this strategy or am I completely off base. My next question is since I will have my wife with me is there a limit of time you can stay out and drive before they make you come home.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Probably not, but you will need to hit "home" occasionally for doctors appointments, check the mail, etc. Even spouse teams will need some down time every now and then.

Hello Bill, and welcome! Most companies that have teams really love having husband and wife teams, so I hope that helps you with that part of your decision. You can almost certainly make around 100,000 a year once you both get to where you can do the job efficiently and professionally, but remember living on the road can be costly.

My next question is since I will have my wife with me is there a limit of time you can stay out and drive before they make you come home.

There is no limit of time, you can stay in that truck for three years straight if your marriage can survive that much stress. They are not going to make you take time at home if you don't want to, and just so you know if you decide to forego keeping a home, that's acceptable also. In fact you can take your home time anywhere in the country you like. You can just tell your dispatcher , "hey in about two weeks from now my wife and I would like to take our home time in Las Vegas, Nevada. And as long as you choose an area where your company has freight to run they will hook you up.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Sounds like a good plan. Down time grab a room and see some sites. Have your mail go to a relatives house and doctors well there coast to coast. If I could get my wife to do that I would rent my house out.

They won't necessarily force you to go home. Teams make some dang good money for the company and its their loss if you go home. But realize that team driving is very difficult. You're living in a space the size of a walk-in closet, it's tight for one person and even tighter for two! Not to mention you'll always be a foot away from your hubby at all times, some space is always good for couples but team driving doesn't offer any of that.

I can tell you that the company won't be telling you to go home, you'll be the one wanting to go home. Everyone needs a break and there's no reason to stay out for an extreme amount of time.

As far as your plan, it's a totally doable plan. You won't be the first to team drive. Husband/wife teams are extremely productive and a great way to make awesome money while cutting down on most of your bills.
