At first ,I want to give my thanks to this website. I have read the book written by the founder. The book helps me a lot. Making me from knowing nothing to know a lot about the american truck industry. I want to be a driver of big rigs. But the thing is that , Does this driver career need a high requirement for language ability? I can read in Engish. But English listening is kind of poor(if people speak very fast, it is hard for me to get it). I want to ask if the communication with the dispacher is complicated or no ? I understand my question is kind of stupid. But if you got some opinions or advices, I will really appreciate !

Qz. That is not a stupid question at all. First may I ask what is your native language? To pass the cdl exam you have to be able to read and write in english. Judging from your post you are certainly capable of that. In my experience people will slow down to communicate with someone. This is a big country with a lot of regional dialects so even an American from Seattle may have a hard time. Understanding someone from the south or even the northeast. I had a load dropping in Tennessee and had to ask the local sheriff for directions. After he gave me my directions I politely told him I knew he was speaking english but I didn't understand a word he had said. We both got a laugh and were able to slow each other down enough to have a nice conversation. Best of luck

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

That is a good attitude and it will help you overcome a lot of difficulty in communicating. The "smile" is universal and I hear the smile in your words. Just remember that you will meet all kinds of people out there and some will be patient and helpful and other will not. Ignore the ones who are not and move on to those who appreciate your attitude. Be patient with everyone and stay humble and you will quickly learn how to communicate with all parts of the country. It is rue many Americans have trouble understanding each other but the LAUGH and the SMILE are universal translators. In my experience, Chinese people have excellent language skills and they have been communicating all over the world for thousands of years . . . take heart and enjoy all the various dialects you will encounter . . . of course, we Californians don't have an accent like the rest of the Americans do . . . we speak purrfect English like God intended it to sound . . .

Qz Z, Ni hao. You will do fine. Most of us are immigrants or direct descendents of immigrants - our parents or grandparents. Everything Jopa said is true. Well, not everything. Not all Californians speak perfect English and they definitely have their own accent. They just think they're perfect.
