As stated a few times above, you get used to the engine, refer, APU noise. It doesn't bother me in the least but even at home all year long, I sleep with a fan running in the room for white noise. But when teaming I always use earplugs as the noise of the tires howling and the radio and CB going on the other side of the curtain wakes me up. With ear plugs, no problem. I sleep like a rock.

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

Sleep is one thing that can save your life whether you are driving an 18 or 4wheeler. Now four wheelers its a bit easier to get rest b/c they can just rent ahotel or a motel room. Truckers obviously use a truck stop or a rest area. My questiob is at the truck stop woth all noise from the APUs , idling trucks, random honk, Lot lizards, how do you sleep with all the noise? Do you use ear plugs, ear buds with music, or do you get use to and it becomes a white noise like the sound of a box fan? I know everyone has there methods. Soooo...I'll hang up now and listen your response.

Another possible aid if you can't get "The brain to shut down" may be to take a very small supplement of Melatonin 30 minutes before you hit the bunk. Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone. It is synthetically manufactured and is cheap, non-habit forming with no side effects.

IMPORTANT:

1) Do NOT use unless you can commit 6+ hours for sleep (otherwise you may fell groggy in the AM)

2) 1/2 mg would be where you would want to start. If not sufficient, try 1 mg.

The supplement basically tells your brain it is night time and is time to shut down for rest. It won't knock you out cold to where you are sleeping obliviously to any interruption, but should get you over the "hump" of getting to sleep. Ear plugs and white noise machines (as aforementioned are excellent too.

Good luck and take care out there!

Michael, if you are rolling like a trucker rolls, this is a non-issue. You will sleep.

I completely agree with Rolling Thunder on that statement. I never slept so good in my life as I did during my first six months. I burned the candle at both ends, I have always been a hard working person who put in long hours, but that first six months was so hectic, and it requires such constant, vigilant concentration, that it is completely exhausting work.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about Lot Lizards, I've been all across this country many times, and have slept in a lot of different truck stops. I think I've only had them knock on my door maybe about three of four times at the most in about an eighteen month time period. They are not nearly as prevalent as they were some years ago. Most of them now are poor lost souls that are so strung out on drugs that they will do just about anything to score another bag of dope. If I feel anything towards them it is pity.

There is a group in trucking called Truckers Against Trafficking. It's fairly large and we'll know amount drivers.

While I don't disagree with the way they look also know that alot of these girls are underage and hence the reason for the above mentioned group. They do good work and truck drivers are their eyes and ears. Look them up. I am sure Anchorman can find their website and post it.

When it's a trafking situation they don't have a choice. Either under the influence or fear or drugs or both. I have never known and under age girl that wanted to be a professional sex worker.

I believe niether did the adult ones. Yiu never see a pimp recruiting at a job fair. Maybe im gullible and everyone the benefit or the doubt but i just dont believe that a young lady ever dreams of being one. My heart breaks for them b/c they are trying to fill a void somewhere.
