No Matt. Cell phones even hands free are a big no no. So never call the dm or anyone else at swift while n driving status.

double-quotes-end.png

Ah, okay. Thank you. That will be one MISTAKE I won't make.

Yeah, it's better to just have zero tolerance on that so there's no discrepancy on who's using their phones and how.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

I won't say I never talk while driving. But it is always hands free. I don't care where I am when my daughter calls me Dad answers. And sometimes the road is so long and tedious that I will call the wife just to help remind me of why I am doing this and to hear their voices. But as I said when an incoming call is from the office it goes to voice mail.

I should probably add I did not go to a Swift academy. Private school, got my cdl w/ all endorsements and 3 days orientation with Swift in Denver.

double-quotes-end.png

Does Swift allow hands-free use of a cell phone?

No but most ignore that.

I am at the Swift academy in Virginia right now and it is by no means a cake walk. The class that started a week before me began with 32 8 graduated, my class began with 16 there are 5 left, the class right after mine started with 18 and I think 7 are left.

DO NOT think that swift schools are handing out CDLs that is very far from the truth.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I've also heard that you have to "be able to drag a 125 pound fifth wheel." Anybody know about this or can tell me what the hell that is?

My recruiter is sending me the details of what the physical requirements are, so I can test myself. Fingers crossed.

Did you ever get this? It would be great if you could post it here.

Nope! I just called her to follow up. Found out "Unfortunately she wouldn't be able to get me in, because I have more than 1 year of unemployment in the past three years." Guess they weren't going to call me or let me know that. Maybe I need another recruiter. Guess I filled out something wrong on the app? Pulled up my resume and I definitely don't have more than a year of unemployment, and while I was unemployed, I was a student! So, we'll see. Anyways, trying to get in contact with the Swift trainer now! Gotta have a back up! Really wanted to go with Knight, but I think the recruiter may be avoiding me now.

Jason:

Don't give up on your first choice, although a back-up plan is definitely in order It's a simple thing to show you were a student. Like many have said here, the company just wants to know you were doing SOMETHING other than just sitting around.

Either way, you will make it. Keep pushin'

Sorry for the experience with Knight, Jason. Definitely give Swift a jingle and you may want to ask for Joan Ivie. She's very nice and honest.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely give her a shot. If I don't hear from my recruiter at Knight tomorrow, I'm going to call the 800 number and ask for another recruiter. I'm thinking I must've filled out the employment history incorrectly or something.

I've just applied at CR England as well, but it seems they are almost trying to force you into leasing, and at about 25-27CPM they are one of the lowest paying after you get out of training. So, they're a last resort after Knight and Swift, if all else fails. Does anybody have thoughts on them?

Regards, Jason E.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.
