Howdy! I used to be a stay at home dad as well.
Well, it's easy enough to get to a school without financial resources, make it through, and get started. The drawback is that is takes a few months to start making money that will pay bills, and you've got to feed yourself through school and training. But, once you call a company and tell them you're ready, it happens fast. They'll have you on a bus pretty quick. It's hard to leave the family behind for at least 3 months, but if they are supportive and you've got a plan, it's doable. Leaving my son for about 4 months was the hardest part of going away for school and training.
If I had it to do again, I would have seen if I qualified for a local school and some kind of assistance program to help pay for it. I would recommend a longer school. However, it's easy enough to find a company that will train you and put you to work. As long as your health, criminal history, driving record, etc., isn't a problem, there's nothing keeping you from moving forward.
As for living in Florida, I know there's companies that say they don't hire out of Florida, but I started with one of those companies, and my first trainer lived in Florida! Have you perused the various company websites and seen what was available? The work history I don't think will be a problem as long as you can show where you lived and what you were doing. It should be easy enough to show you were a stay at home parent.

So I live in Florida which makes my options to get into this industry very limited at best. I have applied at the 3 major companies that do in house cdl training as of 4 days ago.. I cant seem to get a recruiter on the phone when I call for a recruiter.. I have been a stay at home father for the past decade and dont have a job history to be braggart about.. I have begun to get stressed out bc I am starting to worry I wont be able to get into the industry in the way I want too.. I have heard so many bad things about trucking school I really dont want to get into this industry unless it is working directly with a company.. My finances are limited so this doesn't help my situation.. any suggestions would be really appreciated
