how much can a owner operator make a year ?
Truthfully the answer is Zero and the limit is set by the type of operation and business plan you have. When I had my own two trucks I grossed $275,000 on each and brought home $68,000 after expenses.
Frankly I am tired and don't have the energy to cover this topic tonight
An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.
Michele, like any business an Owner Operator can lose everything. But unlike many businesses you won't have much of an opportunity to make the big bucks. The profit margin in the trucking industry is about 3%. In other words, if you were to make $40,000 as a company driver you would make about $41,200 as an owner operator if you added in that 3% profit margin.
Years ago I spoke with the operations manager at US Xpress where I worked at the time. I had gotten to know him pretty well professionally. He told me the company turned an average profit of $50 on a 500 mile run. Yap....50 bucks profit.
If you want to own a business, find one with good economics. Make sure you have one that gives you a decent opportunity to turn a worthwhile profit. Trucking really isn't it. It's a commodity service where only the lowest price matters. Those are the type of businesses that are nearly impossible to make good money with.
