Soooo I have a portable gaming sytem for my Xbox and a tv I want to bring etc.. I obviously need to plug these into a power strip.. how does that work? do i need an APU? orr...... yeah I have no clue help?

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

I have a 1600 watt invertor mounted to the side of the cabnit behind the drivers seat. Works well

So an invertor runs right off the battery? or is that off the apu? I am a rookie (start school soon) and have a basic knowledge of elctronics

How expensive was that to set up? What kind of batteries?

Depending on the company you drive for, you may or may not have an APU/ power inverter... Some companys will install one if you buy it others won't period.

I'm not sure what companys already have them, I know mine (Gordon) does, I think prime may have an inverter?? I'm not positive

There are portable inverters that plug in to the cig outlet, but your only getting 450watts which is enough for a laptop or TV/dvd player. Not sure if a 360 is over that watts for that...

I start school for Swift in a few weeks and I am under the impression they do not have APU units on any of their trucks.. The xbox is rated around 300Watts max and the portable gaming system I am going to buy is asking for atleast a 1000 watts.. I believe that 1000w includes the pull from the xbox though.. so that would still leave me half way their.. I am afraid even if I can get a cig inverter it will draw to much from the battery of the truck.. So yeah this is my predicament...

Yea swift doesn't allow inverters period. Really stupid, you can get away with the cig outlets but nothing direct to batts, unless you need a cpap machine, that's the only way they will install an inverter.

When I was driving for them, that was suppose to change, but doesn't look like it yet.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

So I directly contacted the manufacture of the portable gaming system.. he tells me as long as I have an inverter what plugs into the cig thing at a min of 450w I whould be good.. so I found this http://www.walmart.com/ip/Energizer-EN500-12-Volt-500-Watt-Power-Inverter/27435081 ... Do you think the truck could handle this? Its 500w and can run through 12v from the cig thingy.. Does anyone know what the capacity of the trucks are for inverters?
