Does it matter which state you get your 1st CDL from if you already have a class C in another state? I know there is supposed to be some national data base so maybe it's just a matter of better customer service & lower renewal fees?

Which states have the worst bureaucracy & the least?

Does a fine riding my motorcycle / bike get jacked up if I have a non-passenger CDL?

Do any states allow renewal by mail?

Let me know if your reply is 2nd hand hear-say or personal experience?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

You have to have your CDL in your home state. So unless you are willing to move you can not have a CDL from a state different from your home address. That is federal law.

If you have a normal licenses tickets would not have an effect on you other than paying fines and fees BUT and this is a big but.....If you have a CDL and then get tickets on your CDL weather or not it is in a big truck or a four wheeler it will go against you CDL....Personal experience.

Renewal by mail is another story. I know most states want a current picture to put on your driver licences since CDL's are good for 6 years in most places. People change alot in 6 years. Plus there is you medical form you have to take to the DMV to have it attached to you CDL. Personal experience from Arkansas.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

If you live in Illinois, you have to take all of the test, if you did your training out of state. So if you ask me Illinois is a state that has some of the most stringent requirements.
