Being the husband of a wife that stays at home, she keeps herself occupied with work and our daughter. Shell be joining me in a few months. (and I think being out with your other half will make you appreciate what they do and see why they do it)

I can also say, a Txt or phone call goes a long way for both party's. Even if its just a simple "love you", " thinking of you", etcc..

Just points from our side ;)

Hi Cynthia!

I was never married so I can't give you the first-person perspective but we have some excellent articles in a category called Family Matters from people who have gone through it. You'll certainly find them interesting until some of the others come along and help you out.

When I was OTR my wife used an app that I believe was called find my friends. Throughout the day she would pull it up and see where I was at that time. It may sound silly but it really helped her a lot.

Funny story, I had ran into a rest area one afternoon and as I was walking out my phone beeped for an incoming text. The text read "potty break?". My first thought was how in the #$%@ did she know that lol.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Great idea! In fact....we already have that:

Trucker Tracker

....right now it shows you're on I-70 near the Illinois/Indiana line

Every time you post here in the forum it updates your position.

I thank u for your help.im not married im a girlfriend of aguy whose been driving tour busses but now he got his class a @b so he wants to drive trucks.I have noone but him living in my home so its gonna be lonely.he says it is a dedicated run but im not sure.he is just going for his week training then on the road.I guess im gonna have to deal with it.I get depressed easy so I gotta figure this out.

Dedicated Run:

A driver or carrier who transports cargo between regular, prescribed routes. Normally it means a driver will be dedicated to working for one particular customer like Walmart or Home Depot and they will only haul freight for that customer. You'll often hear drivers say something like, "I'm on the Walmart dedicated account."

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Cynthia,

I have only been a member here for a short time but I think you have found the best support group you will find and everyone here is here to help each other out... Just my observation

I am both a driver and have dated drivers so here is my tip to you. You must have alot of patience, trust and understanding to be the significant other to anyone who has a job that requires them to be gone. First off not every man that drives a truck is a "rolling stone". While im sure "back in the day" ppl had time to be free and "do whatever they wanted" electronic logs make that near impossible. Think about it you have 10 hrs in any given place to sleep, shower, eat and do whatever you want. Sound like enough time to fit anything extra into that? Secondly it is hard enough out here without the extra burden of another person stressing you out. We all have anxiety and fears. You need to be a support not a burden. Thirdly (even a word? Idk but it is now) You have a whole bunch of free time when your trucker is out. Utilize it to do what you want but when hes home the whole world will likely revolve around him. But keep in mind he will be tired and need his own personal space too. Please dont take that personal. Have quite things in mind for the 2 of yall but keep in mind we live on a schedule out here. We dont want to be micro managed at the house. Go with the flow. This life is full of disappointments and missed opportunities. Rule #1 Always expect the unexpected. Rule #2 Dont make plans. I would recommend you riding along so that you can grasp some of the concept of whats its truly like out here. You can never fully understand unless you actually become a driver but you can try. You can figure it all out. It wont be easy but 1000s of woman do it everyday with families too boot. And if ya need anything else just holler.

Electronic Logs:

Electronic Onboard Recorder

Electronic Logbook

A device which records the amount of time a vehicle has been driven. If the vehicle is not being driven, the operator will manually input whether or not he/she is on duty or not.

SAP:

Substance Abuse Professional

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.
