I'm sure others will jump in with their experiences. But I wanted to let everyone know that when you apply for truck driving jobs you should call them yourself if you don't hear anything within a couple of days. Recruiters are notoriously busy and it's quite common not to get a call back from a lot of companies. And don't concern yourself a bit about being a nuisance. It's quite the opposite in fact. The more serious you appear to be about landing a job somewhere the more attention you'll get from the recruiters. So call them yourself and keep calling until you get someone on the line that looks at your application and gets the process rolling. If you sit around waiting for calls you're going to miss out on some opportunities.
Thanks Brett! I will definitely keep that in mind. Awesome web site by the way!
Well for me i was aiming for local. So during school I got my prehires from all the big companies first. You know just as a back up plan. Also too because i was told that you needed to have your license in hand before applying local. After I got my license i started applying local. I had interviews the first week. I ended up with four interviews my first two weeks and with three job offers. So i was off and running within a month of getting my license. Things would probably go quicker had i gone otr first, but for me that was a last resort. Good luck sir
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Wow that's crazy how fast it is! I hopefully won't have a problem getting on the four I want. Thanks bud.
While in school i took 2 days to pick my top 5 and applied. I got 4 prehires from my top 4. Did not even call the one whom i did not hear from cause they were on the bottom of my list. I only followed through with my top 2 and set 2 orientation dates. Then settled on 1.

I applied to 1 and 2 weeks later was starting their company school.
I also forgot to mention that, that time frame includes giving my old company a two week notice. So really it could've been much quicker.
Wow that is all good news. I was starting to worry I might have to drive for someone I didn't want to. Thank you all.
For me it was super quick. I went to an independent truck school, and got my CDL on oct 4th. I didn't get any prehires because I was thinking of working local so I took a couple days to figure out what I was gonna do. I Filled out applications on Wednesday the 8th to my top 3 choices. The next morning I received a call from all three, spent all day talking back and forth to the recruiters and was offered an orientation spot the following Monday the 13th. I've now finished my first week with my trainer.
Maybe my results were not normally the way it goes and some of the experienced guys can chime in but everything has been really quick. Good luck to ya and hopefully you can get on with your top pick.

I was just curious about how many companies you all applied for before you got hired? I know every one is going to have a different answer depending on a lot of different factors but I would just like to hear what you all have to say. I have done a lot of research and came up with a list of about 8 companies that I would consider driving for and out of those 8 they are 4 that I would be extremely happy with. I know you should get as many pre hires as possible but throw me some real life scenarios. Thank you all who take the time out to help.
