Do I have to buy my own gas during my first year of training? How does the gas thing work?

Jeanne, company drivers never pay for their fuel. You'll have a company fuel card to purchase fuel with. I'm warning you now though, if you ever put gas in that diesel truck, you are going to have a real problem on your hands.

I have gas in mine, but I need it for the pony motors on the trailers I pull... The last time I did not pay for it, they sent a squad car... LOL

BTW Jeanne.... Proper terminology is Fuel and Throttle/Accelerator not Gas and Gas Pedal. Old School is correct about having a fuel card except again with me... Boss gives us checks.

Thanks Pat - so much to learn. Duh - gas/diesel. Thanks

Yep, and if the card they give you says PHH and it's for maintenance too, be prepared, since at least in the Midwest, you will have interesting issues getting maintenance performed. I've had to deal with them twice now.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Do companies ever offer the option of paying for diesel on personal credit cards, and then reimbursing for said purchases? Could really rack up the frequent flier miles if they did...

LOL. ironically I work for a credit card company right now until I get my CDL , I talked to a guy the other day that does this, no idea what company he was with could have been a mom and pop, but he charged it all on his personal credit card and the company reimbursed him. Was fun as heck chatting with him while he redeemed like $7500 worth of points for gift cards.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

My guess would be no..they don't allow you to use a personal credit card. The fleets get a big discount for buying in bulk and your card would mess that up. However in situations where you don't have a nearby "in network" fuel stop...which almost never happens... My company will allow me to pay cash and get a PO to reimburse in next check.
