So I've been out with my trainer since Saturday night, left Omaha and did a short 90 mile round trip to a Sam's club, then back to the terminal. Then left the terminal in Omaha and headed to a Wal-Mart DC in Utah, south of Salt lake city, picked up at a different Wal-Mart DC in Hurricane Utah and got sent to Red Bluffs California. ..... 3rd day driving and after going through the mountains, I found out from Guyjax this was Donners Pass....so after ony logging 1000 miles of windshield time, I experienced something special I guess!

Will admit I gripped the steering wheel pretty tight with both hands

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Donners Pass is not hard to know when you go through there. Signs everywhere.

Guess I shouldn't have been down shifting from 10th to 9th either after I was headed down a 6 percent grade, that shift should have BEEN completed before I headed down.......just doing what I'm told!wtf.gif

If that's what you were told then your trainer doesn't know how to do mountains. You were probably very light.

That explains it. But under normal circumstances don't ever take a 6% grade in 9th gear and don't ever downshift while your descending.

Hope you enjoy(ed) the Walmart in Red Bluff. They take forever!

Was a drop trailer, look for an empty, non found bobtail back to truckstop, only in there about 30 minutes

Bobtail:

"Bobtailing" means you are driving a tractor without a trailer attached.

My fitsy night in my trainers truck was going I64 west though west Virginia, over 100 miles of sharp curves and up and down 7% grades with 35000 pounds. On top of that it was 10:30 at night and storming.

I have now done that stretch 6 times. At swift we have eaton 8 speeds so the down grades are done in 7th or 6th depending on weight. I use 7th if under about 37000 6th if over.
