Need help. I want to know if you can install an electrical outlet to an apu Need somthing for my microwave and my tv. Im new to staying in my truck for long periods of time. Most of my work is from the oil field, and they only have day cabs. truck is a kenworth t660 2011 . Thanks for the help.

Day Cab:

A tractor which does not have a sleeper berth attached to it. Normally used for local routes where drivers go home every night.

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

Alan, the "inverter" is connected to the batteries directly and doesn't have any real connection to the APU. You can get a 1500 or 2000 watt inverter for around $200 at most truck stops and they come with cables and instructions. The APU should be set up already to detect when the batteries are running down from use and then it kicks in to recharge the batteries. Good luck,

Jopa

Jopa nailed it.

Its pretty easy to connect to batters. Most have clips like jumper cables, but you can get ones that you put behind the nut on the cables. If you not that mechanicly inclined, best to have a pro do it.

make sure you connect cables to inverter first then put pos (+) on batter then Neg (-). (Red is + and black is -)

Also, make sure that you'll be following all policies set forth by your company. Some companies don't allow you to have an inverter over a certain amount of watts. And most companies don't want you to install it yourself. If you must have it, they would rather do it themselves. Inverters can be a hazard. Best to check in on your company policies and have a company mechanic do it next time you're at the shop.

Yea .I've checked with the owner of the truck and he is fine with it. I might buy the inverter next week. Not to be cheap but I spend to much money eating out.

Thanks for the help.

You'll save a ton by installing the inverter in the truck and having the ability to plug in a George Forman grill or a hot plate...

Get a good 1800Watt. You'll have enough power to do a Forman, Coffee pot, hot plate, tv...

Coffee pot - 600Watt Forman Grill - 1000Watt Tv - 120Watt Laptop - 200Watt (gaming laptop) Nutri-Bullet - 900Watt

as you can see I have enough juice to power all of those (not at the same time.. ) my TV, laptop and Coffee pot are plugged in all the time. Coffee pot only uses 600 when its brewing, other wise it sits at 200. I'll plug the grill and bullet in when i need them.

Walmart has a hot plate that you can stick a skillet on that does 900Watts as well.

you'll save a ton by cooking in the truck. I too suffered from eating out everyday... no good.

I have a 32 LED on my truck. I can't drill holes or any mods so I got small chain from walmart and used it to strap the TV against the wall. Tooks some enginering to get it done. Its stayed put for the last 3 months with no issues..
