Thinkstomuch, CONGRATULATIONS on your hard won CDL !!! And don't worry about the glasses. When you get rich you can get it fixed with the lasix surgery. A friend had it done, now has 20/20, and his eyes were worse than mine. I am not a candidate..dang it. Enjoy your orientation,,,and remember to watch and listen...and ask any questions that you need to in order to learn what you need to know. And of course, keep us posted....I think your the fist rookie from here to go into tankers...

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Go to Americas Best on MacArthur RD. Next to Kmart. You get 2 pairs and the exam for 69.95. You need 2 pairs per dot regs in case one breaks.good-luck.gif

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Woah. I am glad I read your post this morning. I was going to go to Walmart, it's like $50 for the exam, and then whatever for glasses. Just made an appointment at America's Best.

Eye doctor straightened everything out. Funny though because I have 20/70 in left eye, 20/10 in right eye, both eyes are 20/10 this is UNCORRECTED. After he fit me for some lenses, he corrected my combined vision to 20/15. So basicly wearing glasses and driving with both eyes open gives me worse vision than not wearing glasses and driving with both eyes open...?

I know I have to do what the regs say, but this is kind of funny. Picked up my TWIC as well today. Now I really have everything I need.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

I would imagine it would hinder your depth perception if both eyes aren't perceiving things in a balanced fashion. I doubt it was something you ever noticed before, but it has to have an effect. And now you're going to be spending a lot of time driving at night trying to read signs and the like. It would also cause more fatigue having your eyes focusing differently.

The depth perception thing did occur to me and I asked the doctor. He gave me some fancy medical explanation and said that it actually does not affect depth perception. Guess I have to trust the doctor. He did say if I injured my better eye... THEN I would have an issue lol.

I need to call the doctor who gave me my second DOT physical and ask do I need to discard my first DOT medical card and just keep the second one? It's weird because I have my CDL-A and it obviously does NOT say I need corrective lenses because they used my original medical card. I also have to call my recruiter and ask if I need my glasses for training (I would assume I do), problem is they won't be delivered for about 10 days.

So... do I keep my original medical certificate, or is that one now void and I carry around the second one?

I would just hang onto them both for now, but the newer one will be your current one.

Yep glad I passed. Will be picking up my CDL A on Wednesday and then need to confirm my orientation start date of next Wednesday the 29th with Schneider Bulk Carriers. I am excited.

Can you give some advice on that driving test?
