I DO have advice... Go out and get some driving experience for Heaven's sake!! How do you think you are going to go out and drive without any experience and just go because you have a CDL???!!! I would be very afraid out there with a trucker with no experience! How did you get your CDL in the first place??!! Wow...... Scary!!! shocked.png

Got my cdl class a 4 years ago and never drove. Now an o/o has offered to hire me put me in the truck with a load and jump right into it with no hands on training and offered me 36 CPM tax free with 1099. I really believe I can wing it due to the massive amount of research I have done. Any advice?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

CPM:

Cents Per Mile

Drivers are often paid by the mile and it's given in cents per mile, or cpm.

What??? You haven't read the posts here about all of the things newbie drivers have encountered in their first weeks?? TRAINED newbies? Are you suicidal? Think about who you might kill trying to master an 80,000 pound BUILDING (as Brett likes to call them . . . ) that's just wrong no matter how you slice it . . . forget about taxes, how's your medical coverage?

Well thanks a lot Jopa. No I'm not suicidal and even though I don't have the exp most start with I am comfortable driving and backing. I just thought maybe just maybe I would have someone step up and actually help me out. A mentor or someone I can call if I need to. Coming to a truck stop near you. Cya

If it's a mentor you are seeking, everyone here will answer any question for you that we can . . . it's just that in today's traffic and crowded cities, I cannot imagine that you will be able to make the right, safe split second decisions that will come your way . . . at least try to get someone who can advise you real time to drive with you for a while . . . you're gonna do what your gonna do, just try to be reasonable about it and get hands on direction in the most basic form . . . you'll be very thankful if you do (and so will everyone else) . . .

Thanks all for the advice.

Just wanted to tell you be careful. I too am about to get OTR without formal training. One thing i will make sure of is that I take a trip, a week or so, with the guy who is giving me the truck. That might not sound like much but it will give me a feel for the responsibility of 80,000 lbs over multiple 11 hour drives. I have about 20,000 miles driving a straight truck, 20,000 lbs and I don't even begin to kid myself it is the same. I do have the similarities of 14+ hour drives, but 4x the weight comes with a whole lot more responsibility. Watch your fatigue, and especially your following distance and the right gear going down hill. By the time you need comforting advice on these issues, it is too late. Remember that your number one obligation is for the safety of others, your safety, and keeping that truck under control. GOD BLESS

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated
