Hauling for Landstar he's an owner operator. Drivers do well there but it's all O/O.

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

If you're looking to earn as much as possible then look into being a team for an LTL company, if you have any LTL companies in your area.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

Redd, husband/wife teams have it made as long as you don't go and do something dumb like buy or lease a truck. Don't do it!!! You and your wife should remain company drivers. Husband/wife teams are highly coveted in trucking. You'll have your pick of the litter when it comes to choosing a company, especially once you guys get even a few months to a year under your belt.

If you guys stay company drivers you can expect to make about $80,000 your first year, about $90k-$100k your second year, and it will likely top out around $110k-$120k soon after. Now let me explain a little about those numbers. That will be your combined gross pay - what you and your wife will make together before taxes are taken out. Those are also safe numbers. There are better opportunities out there with better pay, but not many. You have to hunt them down a bit. "6 String Rhythm" mentioned one of them - running LTL (less than truckload).

Here's a list of the Top 25 LTL carriers so you know who we're talking about.

Make sure you go through our Truck Driver's Career Guide from beginning to end and follow all of the links you come across. That will help you understand the industry a whole lot better and make better decisions for yourselves.

But seriously, forget all about buying or leasing a truck and ignore the "streets paved with gold" B.S. you'll hear from owner operators and lease drivers. Half of them will tell you they're rich, the other half will tell you the truth. But almost all of them will tell you what they're grossing, not what they're netting after expenses. And with a 3% profit margin in the trucking industry you can probably imagine why.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Want to end your married life quickly? Simply add the financial stress of buying or leasing a truck to your already stressful team driving experience. Better keep the number of a good divorce lawyer on speed dial.
