Hi guys I am new to this site and have a few questions about Truck Driving Company's? I have driven a school bus for 6 years and figure why not try for my class A! I looked up C.R England but they are all the way in Richmand Indiana. I live in Chicago so I would rather go to a company that offers training here in Chicago. I don't have a car so I have to travel within city limits for schooling. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Hey Timothy, go through our Truck Driver's Career Guide from beginning to end and follow all of the links you come across. That will help you understand the industry better and make better choices regarding schooling and finding a job.

It really makes no difference where a company is located or where you get your training. If you go through a Company-Sponsored Training Program they'll provide you with transportation to their facility and then room and board once you get there. But there are also a ton of private trucking schools in Illinois also.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

I was driving Xmas morning through suburbs of Chicago on I-294 and saw a parking lot and building on East side of I-294 that had trailers with Truck Driving School information on the side. I can't remember the name of school, but on google search I found Star Truck Driving school in Bensenville, IL and Progressive Truck Driving school on Belmont Ave in Chicago. I am sure that there are others if you just spend the time searching using either google or googleMaps.
