CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Someone with more experience will definitely respond to your question but figured I'd drop a reply in the mean time. From what I've read on this forum it cannot hurt to apply to OTR companies. Just be 100% honest throughout the interaction. Be upfront about the felony and the accident. I think the fact that your current employer kept you on would go along way to explaining it away. Plus your felony is 10 years old or close to it at this point. Worst thing their gonna say is check back with us or we'll call you. Try looking at the company's website for hiring requirements before you reach out so you have an idea of what their criteria is for hiring. Then you'll be better prepared to answer questions and explain your situation.

Also depends on the felony if its theft,alcohol/drug and not sure but maybe firearms you might have a problem..... I would apply to every single company out there and if you can find one that would hire you go to a private school and get your cdl
