Took a run up to our Scranton, PA terminal the other day. I went right by Prime's Pittston, PA terminal location. It's located in the same industrial park that our company terminal is located. Brought a smile to my face since I was strongly considering Prime's tank division, and I would've had Pittston as my orientation location.

There's lots of Prime drivers on here, any of you guys been to Pittston?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Nice digs . . . a smaller version of the main terminal in Springfield . . . it has some "bunk rooms" that are like a motel room (free) with no bathroom in it . . . free showers & a (not free) cafeteria . . . repair facilities, etc . . . kind of a "retreat" if you have to be in Pennsylvania - one of my least favorite states as it has rained EVERY time I have been there, which is quite a few times . . .

I'm heading there tomorrow. It sounds like a far cry from the Fontana, CA drop yard where I was 2 days ago. Really nothing to see or do at the drop yard.

Been there a few times. Nice cafe, showers, even got a hair cut there. It's much better than the salt lake terminal.

Spent the night there about 5 days ago. About five thousand times more peaceful than Springfield. We had some work done on the truck while there, new drive shocks, and I couldn't believe how fast it was done, mostly because there was no wait.

Does anybody know if the PA terminal is a training facility for new drivers as well as the other terminals?

This is something that keeps changing. I am from NJ and was told Pittston didn't train....jut sprimo. Then when I went solo I met PSD training in SLC.... Then some in Pitts....I'm starting to think it is a matter of where they have openings. Like maybe the Pitts class was full at the time so they sent me to sprimo. The thing is.. Once you pass the physical and interview stuff you go on the road until you test.... Then back on the road... So it doesn't really matter where u train. You won't be there long... A few days tops.

PSD:

Prime Student Driver

Prime Inc has a CDL training program and the first phase is referred to as PSD. You'll get your permit and then 10,000 miles of on the road instruction.

The following is from Prime's website:

Prime’s PSD begins with you obtaining your CDL permit. Then you’ll go on the road with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel training. After training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for final CDL state testing and your CDL license.

Obtain CDL Permit / 4 Days

  • Enter program, study and test for Missouri CDL permit.
  • Start driving/training at Prime Training Center in Springfield, Missouri.
  • Work toward 40,000 training dispatched miles (minimum) with food allowance while without CDL (Food allowance is paid back with future earnings).

On-the-Road Instruction / 10,000 Miles

  • Train with experienced certified CDL instructor for 3-4 weeks in a real world environment.
  • Get 75 hours of behind-the-wheel time with one-on-one student/instructor ratio.
  • Earn 10,000 miles toward total 40,000 miles needed.
