Graduated school and got my CDL in Sept 2013, unfortunately got an OWI. I got my CDL back a few months ago, I am also only 22 which seems to making even more difficult to find employment. Can anyone offer any advice as to how or what companies might offer a chance for me to get my career started?

Thanks

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Is OWI = DUI? If so you're prolly screwed in trucking for a few years.

Hey Max,

I'd start by searching "second chance trucking companies" ... there are definitely companies out there that will hire a driver with an OWI on their record. But I don't know about your specific situation ... I'd start calling some of these companies and be honest about everything and see what they say... Good luck to you!

Yes, same thing. Thanks for the reply, hopefully there is someone with more experience, possibly related experience or know of someone who has been through this and has been able to eventually find employment. Thanks

If you got your OWI / DUI after your CDL was issued, then unfortunately you are going to have a really tough time. Most companies will not accept even 1 DUI if you're an existing CDL holder, and especially if it happened in a CMV.

If your OWI happened before your CDL was issued, then it's generally a 3-5 year wait for most companies - for just 1 DUI.

You need to start contacting companies and find out from them what the answer is.

Commercial Motor Vehicle

A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards
