I am starting school in Indianapolis on Monday 12th of January, I will be posting daily updates.

First full day completed. I have no experience of any other trucking schools so I have nothing to compare Celadon with, I have however heard some horror stories about other schools. After my first day here I have to say I am very impressed, the facility is spotless, the people are awesome and the accommodation is first class. Celadon provides FREE accommodation ( the dorms are awesome ) FREE meals 3 times a day, and they even pay for your leaners permit and for your test. If you are looking for a trucking school and a company to work for then from what I am experiencing so far I would say Celadon is the place.

Well 2 days classroom completed and we headed for to the BMV for our Permit test. General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles and Tankers. The classroom instruction has been great but I wasn't sure that I was retaining the amount of information that was required. I spent most of the evening studying, even waking up twice during the night and going over the study material again. I passed all 4 endorsement the very first time so very pleased. The driving range is next..... Bring it on !

Combination Vehicle:

A vehicle with two separate parts - the power unit (tractor) and the trailer. Tractor-trailers are considered combination vehicles.

Bmv:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.

Hey congrats on the testing!

Celadon's program is one of the younger ones but they've made a huge commitment with a new building (I'm told) and some heavy investments on their end. In the beginning their program had a lot of kinks to work out from the reports we were getting. So keep the updates comin. We're always looking to find out the current state of these programs and how things are going for people.

Have fun on the range! I wrote a funny article about the backing range at schools called The Backing Range At Trucking Driving School - It's Like Clown Soup For The Soul - you'll enjoy it.

OK, I arrived at the Celadon training school today and we assigned my dorm room. Classes start at 8am in the morning, excited to get started.

Nice, good luck. I recently graduated from Miller-Motte with my Class A CDL , and I start training with Roehl Transport for flatbed on 1/19 in Gary Indiana.

Watch yourself in Gary...that's a rough town to be in and I'm not joking. I used to live near there when I was a teenager and from what I have heard from all my friends back home it's gotten even worse since I moved away.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Thanks for the info. As a former police officer I did some checking on my own as well. I plan on going to class and going back to the hotel and that's it. I'll have a roommate as well and I think there will be other people there for the class too. I will be very cautious though!
