I always figured that urban heat island thing is because in the downtown areas you have (usually) a lot more and bigger buildings which blocks the fresh air / wind and then you have more traffic and bodies which generate more heat, so more heat generated with less wind to blow it out of the area... 10ยบ might have been a bit of an exaggeration but my point being that it is usually warmer in the more dense areas of cities and for that reason I like my weather app to be accurate to the area I am in not just the city as a whole.
