Today I go and renew my physical. It's been about two years since I last had a physical and I need to get it done sooner rather than later. Wish me luck.

Good luck! LOL.

I got pinged for blood pressure on my last renewal. Put on a few pounds since my previous one - and was in the process of a stressful move. Had togged back on BP meds and re-test.

Does your company make you return to their doctor to test - or can you just go to any walk-in center to renew your card?

I can go anywhere. But, I pay for it. It's okay, it's a tax deduction where I come from.

Yes it is.

DON'T FORGET - you need to FILE THE NEW MED CARD with your STATE LICENSING AUTHORITY, as well as your employer. The law requires the DMV to have them ON FILE. If you don't get this to your state dmv, they will DOWNGRADE YOUR LICENSE to a non-CDL.

I almost got caught up in this - and realized it when doing a change of address. I'd forgotten my med-card was going to expire at the end of the month, and they wouldn't re-issue a replacement CDL license (with the address change), until I came back with a new Med Card.

It's easy to forget this - and OTR drivers may not even see the notice from DMV (that you're about to lose your CDL), until they get home and read their mail.

Rick

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

I'm glad you posted this reminder as I need to get a new one in March. The doctor had given me a 2 year med card but Roehl had them downgrade it to a 3 month until I had a sleep apnea test done. Surprise, surprise I don't have sleep apnea but now have to pay for another physical to get a 2 year card. Oh well, Roehl paid for the first one but it is inconvenient as all get out. I wouldn't have remembered about the DMV though!

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

I'm off today, so after I complete the physical I'll file it with my DMV. I hope I at least get a one year card.

If you have no precluding conditions - you should get a two year card.

I ended up passing my BP, with meds - but because I am "on meds" for BP - I only got a 1 year card.

Hopefully I can shake the extra weight by the time I have to renew and can get off the meds - otherwise - I'll just go to a different clinic and not disclose that I'm on them, so I can get a 2 year card. If I ever actually get out there and try to drive - I'll have to re-test for the company anyway.
