I am 66 years old and I take a prescription drug for high blood pressure. I wanted to know from anyone if drinking energy drinks to keep awake at 2 or 3 in the morning could damage my heart. I have heard stories from both sides. Anybody have any advice?

Im not sure how it would affect you with the meds, but i dont drink any of those energy drinks (Monster, Red bull, 5 hour energy) because it makes my heart rate go through the roof, and I'm a rather healthy person with no blood pressure, or heart issues.

I have many friends that are nurses, and the general recommendation is no bueno. And this is for healthy people. They are not good for the heart. There are many threads on here regarding how to stay alert during the night hours. Plug in some key words in the search bar and I am sure some good posts will pop up. Power naps, crunchy food, people you can call and radio programs that make you use your brain are all suggestions.

I love my monsters and red bull but my night time driving trick is sunflower seeds....

Rather then energy drinks I would buy a bottle of b 12 vitamins from your local drug store or walmart. I have found they don't give you the shakes and jitters like all the energy drinks do it gives you a little boost of energy and none of harshness.

The main ingredient in those things is caffeine. About as much as one cup of coffee.

Caffeine does two things to you. Makes your heart beat fast and makes you urinate.

Skip the energy drinks

I like my Monster Rehabs, they have almost no sugar and have good things like potasium for energy, as well as some caffeen and what not. Its like having a cup of coffee and a gatoraide.

Hell its better then drinking soda or something like that, and i do not drink coffee. Keep in mind that an energy drink has no more caffeene then a cup of coffee so the guy downing coffee like its their last cup on earth are downing just as much if not more caffene

An energy drink has a whole lot more mystery ingredients/chemicals than coffee. Take a look at the label in the back of the can.

Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system giving the body a sense of alertness as well as dilates blood vessels. It raises heart rate and blood pressure and dehydrates the body.

Taurine is an amino acid that is naturally produced by the human body. However, the version found in energy drinks is manufactured. Most energy drinks that contain Ginseng have such small amounts of this herb most will experience little if any benefit.

Glucose is the body’s preferred fuel. Standard energy drinks contain a lot of sugar. Therefore, energy drinks contain a lot of sugar.

It’s a carbohydrate and a lot of exercise regimen suggest a good dose of carbs for workouts lasting more than an hour.

However, too much sugar intake has been linked to obesity, diabetes, and can spike insulin levels, which can often lead to a “crash” feeling after about an hour or so.

One Rockstar energy drink can have 63 grams of sugar which is the same amount in two regular size Snickers candy bars!

The amount of acai in energy drinks is very low and real acai berry juice no doubt tastes nothing like “acai flavored” beverages since usually other fruit juices and flavors are added.

Even energy drinks that contain high amounts of sugar will also include artificial sweeteners to help cover the medicinal taste of the other energy drink ingredients.

Oh, and here's a list of all the other garbage in energy drinks.

Citric acid – preservative and adds sour taste

Sodium citrate – acidity regulator

Sodium benzoate – preservative

Potassium sorbate – preservative

Caramel color – food coloring

Benzoic acid – preservative, prevents mold

Sorbic acid – preservative

Sodium hexametaphosphate – emulsifier

Gum arabic – stabilizer

Calcium disodium EDTA – a preservative and sequestrant

Potassium benzoate – preservative

Brominated vegetable oil – emulsifier

Monopotassium phosphate – buffering and neutralizing agent

Ester Gum – emulsifier

Yellow 5 – artificial coloring

Yellow 6 – artificial coloring

Red 40 – artificial coloring

Blue 1 – artificial coloring

There's nothing good about energy drinks. They'll only give you a premature heart attack. If there's ever an ingredient that is good for you in an energy drink, there's usually so little of it that it won't do you any good. It's all for marketing. And it's clearly working.

thats why i mentioned the Monster Rehabs, they only have 6 grams of sugar in a 24oz can and they do not have all the extra crap, they are non carbinated so you do not get all the garbage.
