Welcome aboard!
I'm not sure about the specific requirements in California as far as taking a road test, but of course you'll need your passenger endorsement if you don't have it and I know that will require at least a written test.
But I would think you could simply get your passenger endorsement with a written test. I hate to say call the Department of Motor Vehicles in California to ask, but I'm not sure myself.
You can download your CDL Manual for free here. That should spell out the requirements for getting your passenger endorsement.

hello fellow drivers,
I received my CDL almost one year ago and I'd like to move into bus work to keep me close to home. In California will I be required to take a driving test as well as a written test? My only experience so far is with 53 foot trailers. I'm only asking because I'd like to know if I should look for a training company or is this something a class A driver can jump into with some study and understanding.
Thanks, Mike
in CA you will be required to do a writen test and a driving test in a bus. Upon completion you will get the passenger endorcement on your CDL.. you will be required to do a bus pre-trip, skills, knowledge test and road exam...
as Brett said, check out the CA manual.. Your call the 1-800 number for DMV and ask them what is needed... You may need to get addition training from a school, or find a way to rent a bus of find a local job that will allow you to test in one of there busses...
