Or an expandable baton.

The object of a defensive weapon, is to keep a potential attacker far enough away, that they cannot grab/stab/etc. you.

While "martial arts" are nice - by their very nature - they allow an aggressor to get close enough to STRIKE YOU TOO.

First one who gets a good shot in - WINS.

Rick

Bingo.

You have to watch with expandable batons though. Some states will leave a charge at officers discretion with those. They're excellent to have thigh.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Most truck stops sell a "tire thumper"

Sorry to go off on a tangent but this discussion reminds me of the scene in Johnny Dangerously with Michael Keaton. Vernon, the bad guy pulls a hand cannon or of his pants. "This is an 88 magnum, it goes trew walls, Trew skullz, trew the tree outside"

The discussion on "firearms in CMV's" comes up often. It usually morphs into - "ok - no guns - what CAN I DO". This is especially true for women.

There are other suggestions for "safe practices". Parking in well lit areas in the truck stop, close to the building (not always possible). And many more suggestions.

Situational awareness is the KEY - not just in trucking, not just for women - but for EVERYONE. Be AWARE of what's going on around you.

Rick

CMV:

Commercial Motor Vehicle

A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards

Couldn't have been said any better. Situational awareness is just as important when we're parked as when we're driving.

Even though this is an old thread, I'd like to add one more possible self defense item...,wasp spray...will do a ton of damage, from 20 feet away...and perfectly legal to carry...jus sayin... 😏😎😉

You are absolutely right. I read up on that several years ago. Good from a distance and you won't suffer the affects of pepper spray getting in your eyes/face. Thanks for reminding me about that.

I guess this would be covered under situational awareness however, don't take your 10hr break in large cities if you don't have to. Not all the time but most of the time beggars and less than desirable folks target truckstops in larger cities so... get fuel and move on. Plenty of rest areas in the outskirts or suburbs.

What a great idea!! I had never thought of that but you are correct, wasp spray has a fierce long distance spray!! Great suggestion.

Can you believe it, but according to Bud's Gun Shop in Kentucky, which is where I order most of my firearms from, batons of any type are illegal in my state. I don't even know if they're even legal for law enforcement or security guards as the local cops quit carrying them years ago. I never paid attention to the neighboring township or county police so I don't know for sure.
