Is the email invite to orientation the equivalent to an electronic pre-hire , or should I be expecting something in the mail?
The email does indeed count as having it in writing. If they email you an offer, it's legit.
Are the other companies likely waiting until I am closer to completing school to send pre-hires out?
You'll find some companies that want to wait a little longer than others. Some will ask you to wait until you begin school or you're at least enrolled. But obviously the idea of a pre-hire is to make sure you'll get hired upon completion of the school. So that defeats the purpose. You're starting quite soon........now is definitely the time to be applying for all the pre-hires you can get.
Who do most companies use for background check, and am I able to run the same check? I have heard horror stories of things popping up unexpectedly/erroneously on a background check, and would like to check it out myself beforehand.
I have no idea about the specifics of how they do background checks but you can safely assume they'll find everything. One time I was in orientation and a guy in my class told us they asked him why he didn't list a particular job he once had. He said he never actually worked there but about 8 years ago he went for an interview there. He had no idea how they found that out and neither did the rest of us. But they will dig up some serious dirt.
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

I believe I'm in the same puzzled situation as David C. as far as what seems to be a (very casual) invitation to orientation, so Brett - I'd like to clarify:
If I send a quick-submit application and receive an email within 10 minutes that seems too automatically-generated, general and too instantous an invitation on so little provided information and zero communication but does ask to set up a date for orientation -- that is all it takes to make something a legit "pre-hire"?
If so, I just got my first. That was way too easy -- I thought I'd have to actually fill out applications, (not the quick-submitted basic stuff) and talk to someone within the company. Wow.
BMI is a formula that uses weight and height to estimate body fat. For most people, BMI provides a reasonable estimate of body fat. The BMI's biggest weakness is that it doesn't consider individual factors such as bone or muscle mass. BMI may:
It's quite common, especially for men, to fall into the "overweight" category if you happen to be stronger than average. If you're pretty strong but in good shape then pay no attention.

Hey all,
I am preparing to start school the last week of February, and have applied to several companies. I have gotten favorable feedback from all my applications over the phone (expected this from the recruiters). I have not received any pre-hires in the mail, but did get an email back from my top choice (Pre Inc) asking to set up a date for orientation. They are holding my application until I am almost finished with training.
My questions are...
Is the email invite to orientation the equivalent to an electronic pre-hire , or should I be expecting something in the mail?
Are the other companies likely waiting until I am closer to completing school to send pre-hires out?
Bonus question:
Who do most companies use for background check, and am I able to run the same check? I have heard horror stories of things popping up unexpectedly/erroneously on a background check, and would like to check it out myself beforehand.
Thanks Dave
