People are still friendly. It is just that when you see a car or truck along the side of the road we all tend to think everything is fine because they called for help already. If I stopped every time I saw a truck pulled over I would be about 100 miles behind from where I am now.
A couple years ago before I drove a truck I would walk back and forth to work along us-380 out of McKinney Texas. I cannot even count the number of times people pulled over to offer me a ride. Some even in the middle of the night. One guy even did a U-turn and drove me 8 miles in the opposite direction from where he was going.
Yes in your moment of distress it is easy to blame folks for not caring, I have experienced that myself plenty. But if someone knows they can help you then you are likely to be surprised.
