Robert, do some researching to support your thinking. You can check out Truck Driving Schools, and compare independent schools with Company-Sponsored Training .

Don't forget to study using Trucking Truth's High Road Training Program. It's tha bomb for CDL test information.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

Well the answer to the question depends on which company you want to work for. If you want to work for some local company or an OTR company that hires rookies but doesn't provide CDL training, then obviously independent training is what you will need.

If you decide to go to a company that hosts their own CDL training, and you decide to leave that company before whatever period of time the contract is that makes your training free, they don't actually flog you, they just charge you a tuition competitive of what independent schools do.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I'm in a similar boat my friend.

If you go Indy...

Are you going to pay in full? You can pay some of the bigger trucking companies in full without contract and never have to drive for them. They cost less than some of the independent schools.

Are you going to finance your school? Most financing from Indy schools the monthly payment is more than the companies reimburse. Example you will be reimbursed up to 6000 but in payments lower than your making...

If your going to pay in full and are going local... To a non reimbursing outfit... There is a guy here locally southern California he will let you use his truck for 600 to take the test. Pre step. Use the studying here for high road especially the pre trip stuff. Step 1 get your permit. Step 2 go to DMV and watch the guys do pre trip for a while lol. Step 3 rent the man and his truck for a couple days and take the test. That's the cheapest way I have found. And I know a guy that did this 2 weeks ago.

For me...I need to be certain I can get a job first and I can't just go spend a bunch of money out of pocket so... I'm trying to contract.

At will employment vs. Contract Employment... Which one do you want? If you are able to get fired because they find out you like the Dallas cowboys... vs. They want you to stay but your allowed to leave if you really want to...

If Your going to pay out of pocket up front in full... Might just put a down payment on a small class a combination and find a friend to drive With then once you get your license rent yourself for 600 a day to people wanting to test and offer no guarantees. The guy here is 3 weeks backed up...

Explore your options lol

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
