A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control showed that 65% of driver fatalities are caused by traffic accidents. 1 in 3 truck drivers who died were not wearing their seatbelts. The CDC report suggests that up to 40% of deaths could have been prevented by wearing seatbelts.

Why is the CDC doing the job of the NHTSA? Talk about wasting money. Probably duplicating the same work.

So if only 65% of driver fatalities are from traffic accidents, what's killing the other 35% of the drivers out there? Donuts? Lasers? Spontaneous combustion? Aliens? That's what scares me. Over 1/3 of the drivers that were killed weren't killed in accidents?

Head trauma. Drivers banging their heads in frustration over 6+ hour live loads/unloads.

I think the CDC is looking at a different pool of data than what NHTSA collects. NHTSA is only going to be concerned with driving and accident related stats, while the CDC presumably is looking at overall causes of mortality for people with "Driver" listed as their profession. So 65% of Drivers die in an accident w/o a seat belt, the other 35% die from other causes, sickness, heart problems, natural causes, etc. That's how I understand this anyway.
