Saturday and Sunday were my first two days of driving school. After the two days we were asked to obtain our General knowledge air brakes and combination permit. I went to the local DMV today and after a two hour wait I was given the test. I am happy to say I passed all three. Also after only being in a rig for the first time in my life Saturday we were given the chance Sunday to pull forward and attempt a straight line back. This was done with zero instructions and just as what I like to call a treat for us. I learned I need work backing. I was able to do it but not without having to pull up a few times. This was exciting fun but very frustrating all at the same time. I look forward to more time behind the wheel and honing my skills.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

And that's in a straight line! Imagine curling around a 90 degree bend and sticking a trailer that's 8 1/2 feet wide into an 12 foot opening. You'll soon be doing that on a daily basis.

I wrote a pretty funny article about what it's like for experienced drivers to watch newbies off the street learn to back up and it's called The Backing Range At Trucking Driving School - It's Like Clown Soup For The Soul. Have a look.

It's almost as funny as students watching EXPERIENCED DRIVERS.

I used to sit at a shipper near my house, every day - reputedly the WORST PLACE IN TOWN to alley dock - and watch "the pro's" do it.

Picked up some great pointers, and also a bunch of "what not to do's".

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

Brett that was funny. I was disappointed I didn't nail it the first time but I has been 10 years since I backed up a trailer. I'm looking forward to this weekend when I will have more time on the pad to kill those orange cones that sit there and dare me to run them over.

SAP:

Substance Abuse Professional

The Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) is a person who evaluates employees who have violated a DOT drug and alcohol program regulation and makes recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare.

HOS:
