I live in California and I have a Class B CDL w / Hazmat & Tanker and I am upgrading and getting my Class A CDL w/ Doubles/ Triples etc. I have to take all 7 written tests (hazmat, tanker, Comercial general knowledge, regular general knowledge, combinations, doubles and triples, air brakes). What happens if I fail one of my tests like "Comercial general knowledge" all 3 times? Do I have the option to cancel my application for new permit endorsements and go back to my default class B with tanker and hazmat w / airbrakes without losing my lisence? Please help, thank you!!!!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

If cali is like any other state (though they usually aren't) - commercial general knowledge is going to be the same.

You will be "upgrading" to combinations, with the other endorsements.

Don't know about "failing 3 times" on knowledge tests.

Do the trucking Truth High Road Training Program - and you should kave no problem passing all the tests with flying colors.

Rick

Chris, I'm not familiar with your states rules, but here in Texas if you fail three times it just means that you have to pay the fees a gain before they will let you retest.

Here's a tip on how you can successfully master the materials needed to pass those tests. Follow this link to the High Road Training Program and spend some time working your way through that. Thousands have had excellent results by using this completely free and seriously beneficial method of learning and retaining the needed knowledge to ace those exams.

Thanks old shool and Rick! The thing is, I love "Trucking Truth's" program and use it religiously and, even downloaded the test app and use it constantly for my study and it seemed like a huge chunk of the questions were nothing I studied through trucking truth. I have been beside me self all day. I passed all my endorsements except for (combinations, doubles and triples, and commercial general knowledge). Nailed everything else, kind of shocked. I have 1 more test chance for the general knowledge and 2 more tests for both combination and doubles and triples. I just hope it's not a "lose my license if I fail" kind of thing. Thanks again for your help guys.

You won't "lose the license" that you ALREADY HAVE - you just won't be able to "upgrade".

That would be like failing your Class B tests and losing your Class E (regular) license.

Though IT IS CALIFORNIA we're talking about.
