Pre trip the coupling system. Is the upper fifth wheel part of the trailer where the kingpin is, or is it the top part of the fifth wheel mounted to the tractor frame? I want to make sure I say it right on my test. Thanks in advance.
That would be the entire 5th wheel assembly, the apron on the trailer and the kingpin on the trailer. The apron is the steel plate around the kingpin.

Fifth wheel skid plate is mounted to platform which is mounted to the frame of the tractor...the apron is on the trailer with the kingpin

So from top to bottom it'd go Apron
Kingpin
Skid plate
Fifth wheel
Platform?
Fifth wheel is the name of the assembly. fifth wheel plate or skid plate are used interchangeably by different people.
What you are looking for is this....
No gap between the apron and skid plate. Skid plate is not bent, cracked or broken. Jaws are latched securely around the kingpin. There is no missing, broken or bent mounting hardware for the 5th wheel assembly.
At lease that is how I took my test.

That terminology is what I was looking for. No gap between apron and upper fifth wheel or skid plate. Just checking that one or the other was acceptable. Thanks for all the help!

Thanks.
And make sure to say the skidplate is lubricated and sassy that the locking jaws are not cracked missing or bent and with no slack
