I am a 48 year old (gulp) woman/wife/mom/nana embarking on a new road in my life. I have been researching and gathering information on trucking for 3 years, as I wanted to wait to make this lifestyle change until my youngest Daughter graduated high school. So after doing a lot of homework I have decided to go to Quality Drivers cdl School through Celadon Trucking out of Indiana. I have already been approved with a start date of July 8th, I am super excited and extremely nervous. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Welcome to the forum, Linda..no need to take a big gulp...you are right in the right age bracket to become a Professional Truck Driver..as Starcar has said in other places, companies LIKE Lady drivers...they tend to be more cautious and take less chances and seem to pay more attention to small details..I'm sure there are LOT's (see what I did there? smile.gif ) here who can give you some great encouragement and lots of info..I know for a fact that there are at least two other Ladies that are in Celedon's school right now..so, you go in there and look em in the eye and let em know you mean business..before you go, though, try and work through as much of the high road training program as you can..as you have probably guessed by reading other posts..it's the best thing for putting you MILES ahead of your classmates..High Road Training Program. Not sure about their requirements, but if you can get your CDL permit before you go, that will be a HUGE advantage as well..so, welcome again..and drop in whenever you have a question or just want to say hi..

Hi Linda!

My advice to you is to read through every bit of our Trucker's Career Guide and keep working on that High Road Training Program. The career guide will really help you understand the industry and have the right expectations for the challenges ahead. The training program will of course teach you the materials you'll need for the CDL permit test and get you ready for life on the road.

And finally - ask a lot of questions. We're always happy to help out!

Looking forward to following along with ya. smile.gif
