Well that sucks I'm set to attend school CDL school at Roehl Transport July 13. I live in IL they said they would be issuing me a WI CDL. Found this online.

When I returned from attending a truck driving school located out-of-state, I was required to apply for a new license and pay the $60.00 fee. Why? When you leave the state and surrender your license or start the process to apply for an out-of-state license, your Illinois license become invalid. Once you return to this state, you must apply for a new license and pay all the applicable fees. This includes passing all written and road exams.

I intend to apply to Roehl as well to obtain my CDL and have recently become aware of the IL requirements to transfer an out-of-state CDL. I've got relatives in MI and I'm going to look into making that my state of residence if its easier to transfer a CDL there. Seems like a waste of money and time to come back here and spend more money on retaking all the tests

I'm taking my CDL permit test tomorrow and was told I need to prove my residency. They ask for the usual proof of residency, mail from government agencies, utilities, etc. with your name and address printed on the forms.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

If I understand it correctly on the Michigan Secretary of State website, I can use utility bills and such in a relatives name as long as the relationship can be confirmed. That should be easy as its my dad & mom. I'm only a few hours away from where they are so it shouldn't be too hard to run up there for a few days and establish residency.

Just heard back from my recruiter at Roehl and it's what I wanted to hear.

Thank you for looking into this. That is correct. So what will happen is instead of taking the road test in Wisconsin we would have you take your road test in IL so that you get licensed in IL. We will still have you come to WI to take your class however orientation will take care of all the details of you taking your road test in IL.

That makes sense but its a bummer that we wouldn't be taking the road test in the same trucks we train in. Glad we got that cleared up though! Thank you!

Hey everybody, new the forum here. I was just wondering if there is any updates to the situation? I, myself, am planning on going to Roehl's CDL school in WI as well but found out that IL was a stickler for CDL transfers as far as having to retake the tests again. My recruiter said there was a change that IL has to accept road tests from another state again. Can anybody here confirm that? I'm going to talk to my local DMV tomorrow and see what they say as well.

Hey Michael, I'm in the same boat as you. I start classes on Monday at Roehl and my recruiter is also saying the IL must follow the new laws. I'm worried that they are going to have me get a WI license and then when I come home I'm screwed because everything on The IL site says they require all testing for out of state transfers.

Please let me know what your local DMV says.

When does your school start date?

I haven't scheduled it yet, I just started working with my recruiter on the paperwork and getting my DOT exam scheduled. I want to trust my recruiter, BUT I know they're there to get "numbers". I emailed the SoS office and they said the following - "Thank you for your inquiry.

If the individual changes their license to an out-of-state license to get their CDL, then yes, they would be required to do the complete test to change it back to Illinois, vision, written, and road, (pre-trip, skills, and driving).

If we can be of further assistance, please contact us."

So definitely don't switch to an out of state license otherwise you'll have to take the tests again. I will post as soon as I can get a definite answer from my local DMV.
