There are companies that don't require them. im going to be starting with SRT in a short time and they don't require hazmat but they pay more if you have.
Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
hI just got off the phone with the N.Y.state dmv and was told I am disqualified from a hazmat endorsement on my cdl once I get it because I have a extensive criminal background with three felony convictions.I have to wait a few more years till enough time has passed to qualify for it.My felonies are from 2008 My question is will I be able to find employment with out the hazmat endorsement.I already know its gonna be tough with the felonies but what about no hazmat endorsement.?
Most of the companies want you to have one but I think it is more for the TWIK (sp?) card than the actual hazmat endorsement ... I got the card but never got the endorsement and I've only missed one load because of it ... you might find the felony convictions to be much more of a roadblock ... good luck ...

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.
Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
