I'm with Bleemus on this. I call them "ankle-height light hikers". Ankle support, good traction, and stiff enough in the sole to do any step climbing and pedal pushing you need. Get 'em at Walmart for around $35.
I'm in my first week at PSD training and have had no need for anything but sneakers. They work well for learning on the simulators and everything you do is indoors this week. That said, I brought my steel toe Red Wings to take out on the road just in case. I'm going flatbed so it may be required some places. I'm coming from the oil field and, while expensive, these are the most comfortable shoes I own but I'm not sure about driving a big rig with them as a student. http://www.redwingshoes.com/red-wing-shoe/4436-red-wing-shoes/4436-red-wing-mens-11-inch-pull-on-boot-brown
I wear boots while driving/working and have a pair of sandals and sneakers for the end of the day. My boots are comfortable to me but I also made sure I bought a high quality pair. They are waterproof hiking boots I got from Red Wing shoes as I don't go to any places that require steel toed shoes.!
Driving While Intoxicated
Prime Inc has a CDL training program and the first phase is referred to as PSD. You'll get your permit and then 10,000 miles of on the road instruction.
Prime’s PSD begins with you obtaining your CDL permit. Then you’ll go on the road with a certified CDL instructor for no less than 75 hours of one-on-one behind the wheel training. After training, you’ll return to Prime’s corporate headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, for final CDL state testing and your CDL license.
I wear boots at all times on duty. I haven't even owned a pair of sneakers in years.

I wear Keen mid-height hiking shoes all the time. Comfy and the mid height can help reduce the risk of rolling an ankle. They make steel toe versions too.
