I don't really know too much about this one, since it doesn't apply to OTR drivers. It appears that local drivers who always (5+ days a week) start/stop work at the same place can add 2 hours to the 14 hour limit, although it does not extend the 11 hour driving limit.
My guess is it's used to give local drivers more time to complete all their stops, in case of unusual traffic or a long unload. I'm sure someone who's more familiar with it will pop in and explain more. :)
OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

I was just talking with someone who mentioned they use the 16 hour (HOS) exception once per week. Supposedly you can use it once every 4 days but for their purposes it equates to once per week.
Can anyone using this 16 Hour (HOS) exception share their experience and practical use of the of the rule?
HOS:
Hours Of Service
HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
