Does anyone know anything about Prime's Preliminary Driving Skills Evaluation test they give out??I already have my CDL and Start Prime soon but was just curious about the Driving Skills Evaluation??

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Don't quote me but from what I understand it's a basic road test and I do believe backing. Basically a CDL Exam without the pretrip part. But again this is based on what I've heard, NOT, on personal experience.

I did my training through Prime. Unless they have made very dramatic changes (and from what I hear from folks I know still at Prime), they still do the driving evaluation on a simulator.

Hope this helps to answer your question.

If you're going to Springfield then you'll be taking it on the simulator. It's easy, just don't drive like you're playing Grand Theft Auto and you'll pass.

However, Salt Lake City and Pittson don't have the simulator. So if you're going to either of those places for your orientation then you'll have a road test with an examiner sitting beside you.

Don't sweat it, if you know how to drive you'll pass easily. It's pretty basic and nothing you should be sweating about. I had to do one when I joined Prime.

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

I just went through orientation in Pittston in Apr. and they do the evaluation on a simulator there now also. I don't know about SLC.

The simulation consists of the basic elements of driving a rig. Lane position, shifting etc.. There will be an instance of a police car on the shoulder with a 4 wheeler you're expected to slow down to 40 if you can't get over a lane. Shift for hills, and back into a loading dock, which when I took it was a "slight" blind side coming from the right of the dock.

If you're coming with previous experience just drive like it's test day, not real world driving. (Which we all know is different from test driving)

If you're coming from outside trucking school basically the same thing but easier since all you've learned so far is test day driving and not real world driving. =)
