Yep, I use the 530. Same info with a 5" screen, which is big enough for me. You can tell the GPS what type of placarded load you're running, and it'll adjust your route accordingly. Not a substitute for real trip planning, of course, but it is a nice help with that process.
The rule is, never follow a GPS blindly. And especially don't follow a GPS for hazmat routing because the GPS will screw you over many times and the fines are much higher when the freight is hazardous.
I haul hazmat often, I use my regular Rand McNally. Just remember to follow the 'HC' signs in cities and never go through downtown - use the detour around the city.
Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
Rand-McNally map book, Rand-McNally GPS, google maps, in that order. Get the laminated map book. Had a Cobra GPS, it was cheaper, so i got it, now i know why it was cheaper, because it was garbage, if I had followed it's directions I wouldn't be trucking today because my DAC score would be so bad no company would look at me. And the thing quit before 2 months had even passed. Go cheap, get the best there is at the start and the money you save in the long run will make it the cheapest.
A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).
It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.
Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.
