You do not have to start over. I had a class B and only needed the combination.
I don't know if it is the same in every state but in Michigan you can upgrade to a CDL A from a B, however I believe (I could be wrong on this next bit) that you have to take the driving portion of the test as well. Of course you will need a background check from the TSA for HAZMAT , but since you have air brakes already you will not need to retest that one for what it is worth. Best to contact your DMV/SOS office and find out the information that pertains to your area of the country.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations
The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.
Thanks for the quick replies. I'm going to apply to prime tonight and want my permit prior to going to school. I have been lurking this forum for awhile now and doing a lot of research and Prime seems to be the best company to go with.

So I have had my class B with air brakes for many years but now want my trailer hazmat and tanker. Does anybody know if I have to start over with a new permit or can I bypass air and general knowledge and take just the combination, hazmat and tanker. Thanks for your anticipated help.
