I've been screwing up my day job a lot in the past few months due to being under a lot of personal stress, i can hardly sleep at night these days. I dont knoe if this is the day it will all catch up with me but it might be.

I have another job so I won't go through a period of unemployment, but i am worried about having lost a positive reference (fired today or not its already down the tubes) and a company finding out that i was fired.

I dont know what my company says about workers they have let go, its quite a big company so maybe they just say that i worked from time X to time Y, but I dont know. I have had this job for a year and half, I work out in the field without direct supervision and plan my own schedules. I was banking on it giving me a slight edge but it might sell me up **** creek.

Beyond grovelling to my boss is there anything i can do about this? Am I freaking out over nothing?

Grovel to your boss.

"I know I've been ****ing up lately, but I am rededicating myself to being a good emplyee"

I agree about groveling, it certainly won't hurt...do it while you still can. But I can tell you from working 30 years in the staffing industry that companies are so afraid of being suit these days they only give dates of employment and will sometimes answer the question, ' would you rehire this employee?" Of course, if they are asked this and they say no, this is a huge red flag.

Most employers these days use background check companies. Unless your next employer specifically asks for a reference check, the background will default to employment verification which means they will contact payroll/HR and will only get dates of employment. Reference checks and employment verification are two different checks. If I were you, I would try to get someone to give you a reference letter from this company. Doesn't have to be your supervisor. This way if your future employer wants to check your references, you get to decide who they contact. Hope this helps.
