I'm at orientation at Swift. They showed us a few videos; one offering insurance through US Legal Services. We were forced to decline or accept immediately.
Is this insurance necessary?
No, legal insurance for truckers isn't necessary. And you are just as "forced" to make that decision as you are "forced" to either get out of bed or not in the morning. A lot of times you need to decline in writing for things. Besides, these are lawyers!
However, as a trucker, you have many more eyes on you than a regular 4-wheeler driver. US Legal specializes (in the offering at Swift) to represent you at any court you are summoned to. Now, on your trip from Atlanta to Duluth, you get stopped in Champaign, IL. The nice people in Champaign invite you to see the judge because you spent too much time on the inside/fast lane on the expressway. Do you want to make the trip back to Champaign in three weeks? Are you going to represent yourself? You are forced to consider if not having to worry about that is worth $7.50 per week.
You missed the key word "immediately". I wasn't given anytime to perform due diligence. When put into a position to pick & choose I tend to balk.
With 62 mph governed trucks I highly doubt getting cited for being in the hammer lane for too long!
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
You can pick up that kind of insurance anytime. If you don't get it through Swift you can get it on your own. I had a service like that for years. It's not a bad idea.
