Finishing up school is a great choice. I was offered a great job recently that I turned down, based off my degree. I totally understand your desire to be a trucker because thats why I am doing it. There will be a day that you will be thankful you finished up your schooling. Good luck.
Here is the thing about any computer degree....in the eyes of most companies if you are not currently working in that field and been doing something else besides computer work for the last year or so you are not relative or current and its hard to find a job when the tech has flown by you at warp speed.
My degree is in theology. I have never used my degree except for when I was a youth pastor and that is not really a job. Having that piece of paper will open up many doors. I agree with you though, a degree in computers is worthless if you want to support yourself in the computer field. That piece piece of paper though is priceless.
Having "that piece of paper" (college degree) used to be priceless, and is still a requirement for a lot of jobs - even jobs where a degree is necessary even if not in the same field. But the heyday of college degrees has passed and their value is declining rapidly. And that's not to say that people should go into trucking or forget college altogether. But the days of strolling on into the workforce with a degree and grabbing any job you like is definitely a thing of the past.
The problem is that the university system doesn't put out useful workers. They're "well rounded" as universities like to say, meaning they've learned a little about a lot of different things. But our modern world requires specialization, and people can educate themselves nowadays online for free in a highly specialized way.
I think we're entering an era where true skills and talents will trump any sort of degrees or certifications you can get. Because the workforce is about to start filling up with highly knowledgeable and talented people who are self-taught on the Web. And I don't mean online degrees. I mean no degree, no certification - just a ton of knowledge and talent in a certain area.
Our university system is quickly becoming a relic of the past. It doesn't serve the needs we have nowadays. On TruckingTruth's Facebook Page someone said:
Here's the thing... College is not about job training, it's about making better human beings, a process of self-knowledge, exposing one's self to wider, more diverse world
That's what college people say when they spend $50k and 4 years of their life in school and wind up working at Abercrombie & Fitch for $10/hr because they can't find a job in their field. College is indeed about job training. At least it used to be. If you want to become a "better human being, (through) a process of self-knowledge, exposing one's self to wider, more diverse world" you get out in the world and experience all you can. You start a business, you travel, you work side by side with talented and experienced people, you take some risks, and you experience all you can. You don't become an amazing human being by sitting in a classroom.
