Trying trucking for 1 year then going back to medicine to work towards an M.D. What do you guys think I should do? Should I stay in trucking?

To be honest, Phil, med school will take up more time and energy than you have. My brother and daughter-in-law both went for MDs

If after the year you realize you like it stick to it. Imagine you'll go for med school will go through all the schooling the training and at the end you might realize you don't like it.

Yes, a Dr. Can make more money than a trucker, but money is not everything in life.

Why are you going to truck it for a year? Thats 1 year experience as a doctor you will never have. Just curious.

Depends on many things to be honest. First being is how much in debt do you want to be in before you start working? If you do not care about being in debt for a few years after schooling then med school is the right choice, you will have a ton of loans to pay back at the end of your schooling. If you want something that after a year you have paid back the cost to get your CDL while making money then trucking could be the better option. Second would be how much retraining do you want to have in say 3 years times? Doctors have to get new training and do more college credits every few years, which means while you are working and paying your student loans off from you degree you will have to pay more, possibly, to get new/retraining. Trucking you have to get a new med card every 2 years, or year depending, and renew your CDL, but you already renew your license now so the cost is minimal.

However all things being equal it still comes down to are able to deal with people who are sick, elderly, little kids, or rude patients on a daily basis or can you deal with being away from home for long periods of time, because no matter the amount of money some cannot deal with this problem. I know personally I could never handle being a doctor just because of the shear volume of people you have to deal with on a daily basis, however I like being away from home as I find it, strangely, relaxing.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Because I need to make some money for about a year and have this to fall back on. I absolutely love people and medicine and I for one definitely have the energy for medical school and I love math and science and I love helping others

I love trucking and medicine but I feel that if I never go to medical school and apply myself then I will be wasting a would be talent that I know I have. I don't care about the debt. I want to be able to provide exceptional care to my future patients and that is the satisfaction. At the same time I enjoy driving and I've been around this industry for my whole life so its nothing new

Sounds like a good plan to me:

- Bank away some cash while getting experience in a backup career where jobs will be available and it is something you enjoy.

- Follow your dream

Seems like you got it together.
