I would guess its exactly the same as a manual.

I agree.
The transmission and air brakes systems are not connected or associated with each other.
I did my air brakes with an automatic... First step is CHUCK the wheels before you even start the test, to ensure the wheels don't move. Transmission will be in NEUTRAL not in any other gear. Afterwards when you are ready to test the spring brakes be sure to engage them then remove the chucks so you can put the transmission in gear and press on the gas with the spring brakes engaged. A hint is, be sure to keep the key in the ON position or the gauges won't operate and you will fail the test.
I guess my question is specifically about the tug test. Sorry i wasn't clear enuff. But i mean, all my books and all the websites i'm seeing say to put the truck into a "low gear". For automatics does that just mean 'press the "D" button' or what?
Put it in drive and tap the gas...

My automatic (and I would imagine most of them) has a manual mode, you put it in M instead of D and you can manually choose the gear with an up and down button on the shifter handle. For your purpose though, there is also an L position, which puts the truck in 1st gear. This is what I use for tug tests.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

gonna be taking my test in an automatic. can anybody give me a walkthrough on the proper pre-trip inspection air brake check for a truck with automatic transmission? not really finding anything on it. any help would be appreciated.
Pre-trip Inspection:
A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.
Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.
