I hadn't yet talked to a recruiter for the fact that I was waiting until I got my physical. I didn't think a company would cover the costs. I appreciate the information. I will get on it now

My recruiter is Stephanie Armstrong and she will get back to you asap. I think there is a drop down box when you complete your application.

SAP:

Thanks for the info Tim. I really appreciate it. One way or another, I'll get my path straightened out. I apologize if I seem disorganized about the process. I guess I put too much thought into it.

Ernst, what kind of miles do average each week and what division/route do you run? I'm signed up for flatbed national. Out 2 weeks or more, home for 3 days.

Matthew, you can pay for a physical yourself if you'd like to make sure you're going to pass everything. But you're going to have to take another one when you get there. So it would only be for your own knowledge. And sleep studies are generally pretty expensive. If you think you may have sleep apnea you can have your local doctor get you on a CPAP machine but it has to be one that can be monitored remotely and approved by the trucking company.

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Hey folks, For those interested I wanted to give a quick update.

I'm going home today after completing the 4 weeks of training in Marshfield and successfully getting my CDL.

It's a big relief and can't wait to get home. I might do a write up about my training, not critiquing it just a explanation of what to expect.

I will say I enjoyed my training experience and made some long lasting friendships.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Definately flatbed. I like the extra challenge of the diversity of cargo. I'm in there flatbed national division.
