Just start studying now. You can either obtain your permit in your home state or wait to obtain one here in Missouri its up to you. As for family not supporting you I hope you mean brother or mom and not your wife. If your wife isnt supportive of the change then things are going to be very hard for your family.
Me and my wife are separated now it happened before I wanted to get into trucking but she doesn't support me and nether does my mom
Who cares what your future ex wife thinks to be honest. As for moms they come around when they see you are happy. Go for it.

As for non-supportive family, who cares what your future ex-wife thinks? I talk to my mom daily and she still tries to tell me all the stuff bad about trucking. I just take it in stride and nod and smile. You have to be supportive of yourself in life. If this is what you're going to do then do it. We'll be here to support you too! Good luck.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
It's quite common for friends and family to have an adverse reaction to the idea of becoming a truck driver. After all, there's no prestige to the occupation in our society. Nobody's mom dreams of their children growing up to be truck drivers. There isn't a high school guidance counselor in the land that would keep their job if they told a student they were cut out for truck driving. Not to mention, it's risky.
So don't sweat that. It's your life and you have to live it the way you see fit.
Make sure you go through our entire Truck Driver's Career Guide from beginning to end and follow all of the links you come across. That will help you tremendously when it comes to making the right decisions for yourself and getting a good idea of the challenges that lie ahead.
As far as getting your permit, do so before you leave for Prime and you'll be ahead of the game from day one. Use our High Road Training Program to study for it. Here is how it breaks down:

And two sections we've built ourselves with info you'll need for everyday life on the road but the manual doesn't really cover it:
A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.
Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A written or electronic record of a driver's duty status which must be maintained at all times. The driver records the amount of time spent driving, on-duty not driving, in the sleeper berth, or off duty. The enforcement of the Hours Of Service Rules (HOS) are based upon the entries put in a driver's logbook.
A vehicle with two separate parts - the power unit (tractor) and the trailer. Tractor-trailers are considered combination vehicles.
Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.
