I was reading an article about trailers being stolen in the trucking industry and how its becoming a problem. Does this happen a lot out there? what can a driver look for or do to prevent a shipment from being stolen? i don't believe i have seen any threads here about it so figured it wasnt an issue.

I had a tarp stolen off my headache rack in Charlotte, and I've woken up a couple of times to find that some joker uncoupled the blue air hose.

As far as having shipments stolen, the advice I've been given is to never drop a trailer in an unsecured yard or truck stop. There are certain more stringent procedures for high value loads, but I've never had anything on my trailer that made me think street racers were about to hijack me on the highway. Hook up to my dropped trailer and haul off a couple of new Cat mini excavators? Yeah, someone might do that, so I never unhook and bobtail to Walmart or the beach or wherever if I'm sitting for a while.

Also, if you notice someone following you for quite a while on the road, that can be a warning sign. Or more likely it is just another four wheeler who likes to follow trucks for some reason. They'll usually pass you on steep grades. If it's flat, you can slow down gradually until they can't stand it and pass you. If you get below 50 mph or change lanes and they just hang back there with you, and you have something really sexy on your truck like blueberries or pharmaceuticals, it might be time to call your dispatcher or dial 911.

Bobtail:

"Bobtailing" means you are driving a tractor without a trailer attached.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated
